Below is a brief summary of the dissertation:
Long-term Caloric Restriction and Short-Term Fasting hold huge potential for inducing clinical benefits in a wide range of populations. The studies included in this thesis show its beneficial effect on liver adenomas, its short-term effect on recovery after living donor and transplant surgery, especially by reducing the burden of disease, and the potential to unlock the Survival Response in the paediatric population by a tailormade diet. Additional research into CR and STF in the clinical field is indicated, while carefully accounting for patient characteristics and potential epidemiological pitfalls. When performed and investigated correctly, we can unlock the full clinical potential of CR and STF in medical and surgical care. Additional well-designed trials, eager to investigate this sometimes underestimated avenue of research, in larger and more diverse populations and diseases, are indicated to fully quantify and clarify its clinical potential.
