Our university bears the name Erasmus University for fifty years, but who was Erasmus actually and why was the university named after him? As of 24 October, you can learn more about Erasmus in the exhibition in the University Library. The exhibition is made up of four themes: Erasmus’ work, the intellectual legacy of Erasmus, Erasmus and Rotterdam, and the Erasmus University.
During the festive opening of the exhibition on 24 October 16:00, you will learn more about the preparations of the exhibition. Prof. dr. Ronald van Raak will speak about what Erasmus can teach us today. Of course, there will be ample opportunity to visit the exhibition on the first floor of the University Library. The opening of the exhibition will be closed with drinks provided by Committee Erasmus Icon of Rotterdam.
Cooperation
The exhibition consists of books and other objects from the heritage collection of the University Library, the Rotterdamsch Leeskabinet and the Erasmus Collection in the Rotterdam Library. The Erasmus Collection was recently registered as UNESCO Memory of the World because of its unique collection of books by and about Erasmus.
Side exhibition
The exhibition in the University Library can also be accessed online. In the online exhibition you will find even more special objects. Moreover, there will be a publicly accessible exhibition in the pedestrian part of the Maastunnel. 36 pictures together tell the story of Erasmus and his role in Rotterdam. The university’s lustrum fund and Committee Erasmus Icon of Rotterdam helped realizing this side exhibition in the Maastunnel.
