Prior to Erasmus University Rotterdam's (EUR) Opening Academic Year (OAY) ceremony, a festive mural ceremony will take place on campus Woudestein. Artist Marije Vermeulen designed the mural titled Hook-Ups for the south facade of the E-building (plaza side) on campus Woudestein.

For the design, Vermeulen was inspired by the building's unique architecture. Geometric shapes and lines form a connecting pattern that builds on the existing architectural lines and details. The mural, with a total size of about 13 x 19 meters, depicts the theme of connecting and symbolizes EUR's commitment to embracing the art of connecting through interdisciplinary collaboration and community engagement. Following this, Vermeulen's solo exhibition 3 = The Magic Number will open in the nearby Erasmus Gallery. In addition to a spatial installation, this exhibition features autonomous work.

Marije Vermeulen (1976) creates paintings, installations, and murals in which a bright, fresh use of color stands out. Her modernist and playful style is influenced by both the glamour of Pop Art and the geometric aesthetics of De Stijl. Her abstract artworks result from an extensive sketching process; she measures, stacks, tilts, repeats, and slides shapes, blocks, and planes on and next to each other. She uses basic shapes such as squares, triangles, and circles and forms derived from these such as stripe patterns in stylized shading. The plane divisions, shapes, and color combinations that Vermeulen uses originate in fashion, magazines, design, nature, and architecture. A reference to the origins of the shapes and patterns in the artworks can often be found in their titles, as in the case of Hook-Ups, which refers both to connection and an architectural detail of the E-building.
From the early developments of the University on Woudestein, the EUR aims to create a special environment. Since the beginning art plays an important role. That is visible in the level and the wide variety of works of art that can be seen in the buildings and the outdoor areas of the University. The artworks together form the art collection EUR.
