Community Event: The Changing role of the Teacher in impact-driven Education

We are thrilled to invite you to our next Community for Impact Driven Education meeting. During this interactive lunch event we will deepen our knowledge on one of the main subjects regarding impact-driven education: the changing role of the teacher. Together with like-minded educators we will share experiences and help each other put knowledge into practice.

Our speaker, Atze Bergsma, will tell us more about the Genomics in Society master program. During this program students identify and work on concrete societal issues in teams, guided by a mentoring teacher and in co-creation with societal stakeholders. This asks different skills of the teacher; not only transferring knowledge but guiding their student’s trough the learning process in a more coaching way. What challenges and opportunities does it bring when you, as a teacher, do not have all the answers or know the outcome either?

After getting to know this interesting project we will reflect and discuss the implications of changing teacher roles. What should and shouldn’t we start or stop doing? How do we deal with forms of assessment that are more time consuming? Do we as teachers have to manage societal stakeholders, and what recourses are available to us? Do we divide teacher roles amongst our team, or must we acquire all skills ourselves? We are sure that discussing our wants and needs for this transition will be a valuable learning and networking experience for all of us.
