Medical students and their future patients often differ in age, health status, education levels, and cultural backgrounds. With her CLI Fellowship, Ida Korfage proposed an innovative approach where students partner with their future patients to get to know them outside of the hospital setting.
The original initiative allowed students to practice explaining what medicines do, interpreting medicine leaflets ('bijsluiters'), understanding how diets work, and discussing lifestyle changes, such as shopping for a healthy diet at an individual basis. This process was aimed at students engaging with a diversity of perspectives and learning about the questions, doubts, and preferences that patients may have.
However, the COVID-19 pandemic affected this original initiative. Students engaged with patients, healthcare providers and other stakeholders at group level rather than at individual levels across a broad range of initiatives. Over 250 students completed a questionnaire before and after these activities to assess the impact of the activities on students’ levels of empathy.
