Beyond the Binary: Wikipedia Edit-a-thon

Wikipedia Edit-a-thon on Queer Visibility and AI
Hand holding tags with rainbow flag and the word 'equality'

Think beyond the binary and help improve the visibility of the Queer community during this year’s Edit-a-thon! Wikipedia may well be the first place most of us look when looking for information. This open-source page is written by people from all over the world and is a resource for AI like ChatGPT. But what if the information on it is biased? Did you know that only than 5% of Wikipedia entries contain non-binary identifications? It's time to change that!

You can do your part in making Wikipedia more inclusive during the Edit-a-thon on Queer Visibility and AI. Create a page, add to one or translate. Or just stop by to learn about the importance of visibility for emancipation.

The program:

  • Dr. Laura Braden (ESHCC) will give a workshop and tell us all about editing, translating, and creating pages, while Wikimedia Netherlands volunteers will walk around to assist. What makes the Open-Source principle of the online encyclopedia so special and what requirements must a good page meet?
  • Romy Rockx of the Queer Gym talks about the first gym for non-normative bodies and how important it is to feel safe in a place where your body is the focus of attention.
  • Kunstinstituut Melly turns 35 on January 27! To celebrate, we will be adding to and translating her Wikipedia page during this Edit-a-thon! You can also visit the exhibition their exhibition on Queer Visibility and more!
  • More names to be announced!

The theme of this year’s edit-a-thon is Queer Visibility but if you have other ideas to make Wikipedia more inclusive, you are more than welcome to join as well!

No prior knowledge necessary, just bring your own laptop. Snacks and drinks will be provided.

This annual Edit-a-thon on making Wikipedia more inclusive, is organized by Studium GeneraleECWO (Erasmus Centre for Women and Organisations), dr. Laura Braden (Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication), Wikimedia Netherlands and Kunstinsituut Melly.
