Tragic incident at Erasmus MC

There was a tragic incident in an Erasmus MC teaching building on Thursday 28 September. A beloved lecturer of our university was killed that day. Our thoughts are first and foremost with the victims and relatives.

Do you feel the need to talk once more with someone about the tragic incident at Erasmus MC? On Tuesday October 24 from 1.30pm to 3.30pm, we are hosting another walk-in in the Living Room for students to share emotions and support each other. Student hosts and a student psychologist will be present to talk with you if you feel the need to do so.

Thursday, 5 October 14:30 - A minute of silence

On Thursday, 5 October at 14:30, there will be a central moment on campus Woudestein in which we commemorate last week's tragic events. We will do this by means of a minute's silence, which everyone can practice at their location. After the minute's silence, music will sound from the carillon on campus in memory of last week's victims.

Contrary to media reports, Erasmus MC, the medical faculty of Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR), has previously received information about the student who shot dead an EUR teacher and a woman and her daughter yesterday.

Update after press conference Thursday evening 28 September

On Thursday evening, the mayor of Rotterdam, along with chief of police and public prosecutor at a press conference, gave further details on this afternoon's terrible events.

Compassion for victims

Before providing an update on the latest information, the Executive Board would like to express its condolences to the victims. Our thoughts are first and foremost with them.

Pitch-black day

It has become a pitch-black day for the university now that it has become known that the perpetrator of the shooting was a student of Erasmus University Rotterdam. Besides taking the life of a 39-year-old woman and her 14-year-old daughter, he also fatally shot a lecturer from our university.

The police and the public prosecutor have launched an investigation into why this terrible event happened. At present, the motive behind this act is unclear. When new relevant information emerges, we will provide a further update.

Walk-in Living Room

Friday 29 September, the Living Room in Langeveld Building will be open for students, staff and other involved from 2pm to 5pm. This also applies to students and employees of Erasmus MC. Anyone on whom this day has had an impact is welcome. There will be 2 student hosts and a psychologist present to talk to. This will at least give an opportunity to share emotions with each other if there is a need.

Erasmus MC students and teachers will also be accommodated in a separate meeting. They have been informed of this by e-mail.

No teaching at Erasmus MC

All medical faculty teaching at Erasmus MC location has been cancelled on Friday 29 September. Scheduled exams at campus Woudestein will continue. We obviously sympathise with students who are now unable to do so due to this incident.

Not on Woudestein campus, EUC & ISS

The shooting did not happen on campus Woudestein or at EUC and ISS. We are closely monitoring the development of the situation. We express our support to all those involved.
