Alumna Clinical Psychology
The way clinical psychology is taught at EUR allows students to get insights into the different areas within clinical psychology rooted in recent research. The courses are coordinated and taught by professors who have wide experiences in the field, as researchers as well as clinicians.
After my positive experience with the teaching standards and the international environment at EUR as a bachelor student in psychology, I decided to also undertake the master’s programme of clinical psychology. During this master programme, courses cover a variety of very interesting topics which are presented in different formats helping to acquire consolidated knowledge throughout the year. Furthermore, the clinical specialisation offers a great combination of theory and practice. Lectures with interesting guest speakers sharing their experiences, excursions to the court or forensic psychiatry, and practicals in which methods of therapy techniques are practiced, help to deepen and broaden the theoretical knowledge. The master program is taught in the form of problem-based learning. Although reading scientific literature at home or at the library requires a good amount of discipline, discussing it with fellow students is an enriching experience. Moreover, discussions with international students coming from different cultural backgrounds, add an interesting and stimulating aspect to the interactive learning experience. Additionally, due to the small teaching groups, students are able to gain a lot more of the expertise the professors are able to offer.
Alongside the master’s, EUR offers flexibility in terms of research opportunities and internships. An advanced research programme is offered to students of all psychology master tracks, which is a great opportunity for anyone with an interest in scientific research. Since all courses take place in the first semester, it is possible to start an internship in the second semester in the Netherlands, but also abroad.
Besides the academic aspects of the program, the small groups make it easy to get to know fellow students and make friends. In our year group, we regularly met for study sessions or drinks at the campus bar or one of the many nice bars in Rotterdam.
Overall, I am convinced that following the master’s programme of clinical psychology at EUR was the best choice I could have made. It assured me that clinical psychology is the right field for me and prepared me well for my future as a psychologist. Even though the master is challenging, I had a great time at EUR and would recommend it to anyone who is interested in the field and motivated to learn in an international environment. I graduated from EUR in 2019 and now I am working as a psychologist in Berlin.
