Alumnus Governance of Migration and Diversity (Sociology)
I’m Tara Knegt and I completed the GMD Master in 2018. I chose to enrol in the Sociology track for the GMD master, since I’m very interested in sociological issues. My Bachelor in Sociology at the University of Utrecht and a minor in Public Administration and Educational Sciences helped to feel comfortable with the interdisciplinary nature of the GMD master. My choice to study migration and diversity derives out of my interest in questions of inequality and how social networks shape our lives. Especially by travelling to the different universities, I was able to study migration and diversity from different perspectives. Although I do not work with migration in my current job, I learned a lot about approaching a problem from multiple angles and gained insight in the issues regarding governance.
Throughout the GMD Master I noticed that the pace is much faster than in my Bachelor, so you have to plan your readings and assignments in advance. But especially due to the small group of students there is time to discuss issues in class and dive into the topics. I have really enjoyed my Master and I could recommend it to everyone who is interested in the topics of migration and diversity.
Currently I’m working as a trainee for DisGover, an organisation in which I have training opportunities to update my skills and develop myself personally. I closely collaborate with governmental institutions and support them with several issues, such as the development of tools to effectively discuss climate impact and assess risks or the implementation of the Environment and Planning Act. In order to keep being involved in migration and diversity related issues, I organised a project that aims to stimulate diversity in my own organisation.
