The Rotterdam Formula

Erasmusbrug

“Sociology, interpreted as a social science, should connect to other social sciences - in particular economic sciences and law - and should focus on vital social questions, in order to influence society and preserve its dynamic nature as a science.” From: Plan for a Rotterdam faculty of social sciences (western sociology) by the Commission Preparing a Social Faculty (chaired by Mr van Doorn, November 26, 1962, page 3)

With the Rotterdam Formula Mr Jacques van Doorn devised a unique movement within sociology as a social science. The Rotterdam Formula focuses on general and theoretical sociology, studying social problems at a macro level. Students trained in these studies are able to apply their knowledge of sociology in policy and advisory positions. This can be public administration jobs as well as positions in business. The influence of the Rotterdam Formula is still recognisable in the current sociology study in Rotterdam with its emphasis on societal questions.
