    Social Sciences and humanities

    Prof. dr. Liesbet van Zoonen is academic director of the Centre for BOLD Cities. Furthermore, she is professor of Sociology and dean of the Erasmus Graduate School of Social Sciences and the Humanities at Erasmus University Rotterdam.

    Her research covers a wide range of issues in the social sciences and humanities, but all concern the question how data and digitization in the city work for civic understanding and social participation.

    Urban Statistics

    Marjolijn Das is endowed professor of Urban Statistics at the Centre for BOLD Cities. This special chair is established by CBS (Statistics Netherlands), where she works as a statistical researcher. In her research, Marjolijn Das focuses on the interaction between city residents and their social networks.

    Organisational Dynamics in the Digital Society

    Prof. dr. Claartje ter Hoeven is professor at Erasmus University of Rotterdam in Organisational Dynamics in the Digital Society. The research focus of ter Hoeven lies on how digital technologies are able to help organise, manage and shape the way we work.

  • dr. Jiska Engelbert

    Media and Communication

    Dr. Jiska Engelbert is associate professor and examines the discourse of politics and the politics of discourse. She was coordinator of the Smart Cities theme in the VSNU Digital Society program, and now leads the smart city research in the Erasmus Initiative Vital Cities and Citizens. She is a widely appreciated public speaker and columnist voor Vers Beton.

    Urban and cultural geography

    Vivien Butot is a PhD student at Erasmus University Rotterdam with a background in urban and cultural geography. Butot has a broad interest for urban matters like citizen initiatives in housing, urban design, sense of place and neighborhood dynamics. In his PhD research for he is focusing on the connections between smart city developments and privacy concerns.

    Dr. ir. Haydee Sheombar is lecturer at the Erasmus University Rotterdam; RSM Rotterdam School of Management; Department of Technology and Operations Management.

    Ju-Sung (Jay) Lee is an assistant professor in the Department of Media and Communication at Erasmus University Rotterdam. His research interests lie at the nexus of social, communication, and semantic networks.  He is heavily involved with accompanying methodologies such as statistics, network analysis, computer-aided text analysis, computational social science, and other digital methods.

    Anne van Eldik is a PhD candidate at the Erasmus University Research Center for Media, Communication & Culture. Her research focuses on urban media engagement by looking at how young people construct an urban identity from their creative media use.

    Sabrina Huizenga is a PhD candidate at the Erasmus University School of Health Policy & Management (ESHPM). Her project revolves around the experimental city and unpacking big data and citizen engagement in urban health labs. In this project, Huizenga explores whether urban labs can be viewed as a radically different, more inclusive mode of governance or the continuation of the status quo in a slightly altered form.
