In its 105 years of existence, Erasmus University Rotterdam has developed into an inspiring place where talented researchers from the Netherlands and abroad have the opportunity to obtain a PhD. Since 1963, the ESSB has been able to offer you a doctorate in social sciences and, for a number of years now, also in behavioural sciences. PhDs can be obtained in various ways: via a PhD position, as an external PhD candidate or via a scholarship. PhD research usually takes place within one of the faculty's strategic themes.
PhD students are admitted to the Erasmus Graduate School of Social Sciences and the Humanities.
How to become a PhD candidate
As a PhD student, you work on a research project under the supervision of a professor. The research results in a dissertation or a series of articles in scientific journals. In addition, PhD students follow courses at the Erasmus Graduate School and often teach students themselves.
