Biography
Professor Will Tiemeijer’s research interests center on the interconnections between behavioural science, politics and government. The past years witnessed a fast-growing interest in applying insights from behavioural science to the implementation of public policy. Tiemeijer’s work explores next steps in the connection of these hitherto separate worlds. He is particularly interested in how the psychological lens can contribute to a better understanding of today’s major societal problems and the normative issues and ethical dilemmas this psychological focus brings into view.
From 1988 to 2007, Tiemeijer held various posts at the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. He obtained his doctorate at Tilburg University in 2006 with the thesis The Secret of the Citizen: On the State and Public Opinion Research (Het geheim van de burger: over staat en opinieonderzoek), which was awarded the Van Poelje Prize. Since 2007, he has been a senior research fellow at the Netherlands Scientific Council for Government Policy (WRR), where he was responsible for a series of high profile publications on the psychology of choice and the relevance of the behavioural sciences for politics and policy. In 2016/17, Tiemeijer was a fellow at the Center for Advanced Studies of the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University.
