With the NWO Open Competition - SGW, the NWO domain Social Sciences and Humanities wants to allow researchers to research a subject of their choice without thematic boundary conditions. This research program is intended for a broad group of researchers in different phases of their scientific careers. SGW Open Competition L is for researchers who obtained their PhD 15 years or more ago and is open every other year.
Sandra van Thiel has received funding from NWO's SGW Open Competition L. She will use this funding for her research ‘User-centred design of public services: ‘when the state meets the street’. How public services are organised does not always match what citizens know, want and expect. As a result, citizens do not always get what they desire or need. The government hopes that more attention to the human dimension in policy implementation can solve this problem. But what is required for this? In this research, we will look at what citizens know, want, and expect, as well as the skills, competencies, and conditions that public service providers must have to be able to meet this.
Sandra van Thiel is a professor of Public Management at Erasmus University Rotterdam at the School of Social and Behavioural Sciences. She has also been appointed as a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW).
