International insights into artificial intelligence within police organizations

Data Science & Business Analytics

What can we learn from police organizations abroad that work with artificial intelligence? That was the central question in an international literature review that researchers Dennis de Kool (Risbo), Brenda Vermeeren (ESSB) and Bram Stein (ESSB) conducted on behalf of Politie & Wetenschap. Their findings and recommendations for Dutch organizations have been published and are publicly available.

The purpose of the study was to gather (empirical) insights into the experiences of police organizations abroad with artificial intelligence based on international literature as well as to derive relevant insights and concrete points of interest for the Dutch context.

The researchers paid particular attention to opportunities, risks and critical success factors for society, the police organization and individual citizens and police professionals. Their findings are divided into three dominant themes: Predictive Policing, Smart Policing/Smart Surveillance, Automated Policing and other. For each application, they examined whether experiences from abroad could also be applicable to the Dutch context.

The report can be downloaded from the Police & Science website for anyone interested in this challenging and complex security issue.
