On Friday 13 September 2024, S.I. Högye will defend the doctoral thesis titled: ‘Child Problem Behavior in the Early Family Environment: Unraveling the role of maternal and paternal harsh parenting‘.

Brief summary:

In early childhood - the first six years - children develop a range of skills that enable them to monitor and regulate their emotions and behaviour (Bronson, 2001; Posner & Rothbard, 2000). If these self-regulation skills decline or are disrupted, children may experience emotional and behavioural problems experience, which I collectively define as ‘problem behaviour’ (Campbell, 2006; Mesman et al., 2001). In this thesis, we have studied both broad and specific categories of problem behaviour, such as when frustrations turn inward (broad, internalising problems) or directed outwards (broad, externalising problems) and involvement in bullying behaviour at school (specific categories).
Because problem behaviour in children is common (Danielson et al., 2021; Jansen et al., 2012; Perren & Alsaker, 2006) and this increases the risk of later psychiatric disorders increases (Grieshaber et al., 2023; Hofstra et al., 2000), we examined the role of the early family environment in children's problem behaviour.
