Brief summary:

There is a growing interest in employability. There are several developments underlying this interest: 1) the changing work context as result of innovations, 2) the prolonging of working life due to a later retirement and 3) the flexibility and tightness of the labour market. Hence, employability is relevant: for employees who want a successful and sustainable career; for organizations that want to be able to adapt to changes; and for society to achieve a healthy economy. As a result, research is growing on employability. However, most research on employability is still executed
within a private-sector context. Furthermore, as employability is a fundamental condition for prolonging careers, there are many policy initiatives to improve employees’ employability, including within the public sector. However, many policy initiatives are based on widely shared assumptions for which an empirical basis is lacking. This research objective resulted in the following main research question: To what extent are the policy assumptions about the employability of public employees empirically valid?
