Admission requirements

For admission to the Part-time PhD programme at ESPhil, you must

  • have a strong interest in philosophical research and a background that includes excellent study results, and other relevant experience.
  • be willing to combine the Part-time PhD Programme with your further full-time or part-time professional obligations.
  • hold a Master’s degree.
  • be proficient in the English language.

Candidates who meet these requirements are encouraged to get in touch with an expression of interest (see below), and may be invited to make a full application to be admitted to the programme.

How to apply

Step 1: Expressions of interest

Candidates who meet the above admission requirements are encouraged to submit an expression of interest to the programme office (Email: parttimephd@esphil.eur.nl, adresses to Ms. Marloes Westerveld, with “PT-PhD programme” in the subject), which includes:

  1. CV (which includes information about academic background, degrees taken, and grades earned in those degrees)
  2. A short overview of research interests, including initial ideas for the topics of PhD work (please mention any names of potential supervisors at ESPhil)

The programme director will evaluate your expression of interest and may invite you to develop your research proposal in order to submit a full application.

Step 2: Developing research proposal and full application

Based on their expression of interest, suitable candidates are invited to develop their research proposal. The programme director will assist you in getting in touch with potential supervisors. A full application consists of:

  1. A letter of motivation
  2. CV
  3. Research proposal that is approved by at least one potential supervisor
  4. Tuition fee statement (in which candidates detail how they will pay the fees, such as by personal funds or employer vouchers. Candidates should also detail whether they will make use of the PhD programme for HBO funded by NWO. Candidates who are not in a position to pay tuition fees should state here that they apply for a partial or full waiver of the tuition fees.)

The admissions committee evaluates full applications. Successful candidates are invited to join the part-time PhD programme.

Tuition fees

The candidate will receive a hospitality agreement, which will give access to the library and an ESPhil e-mail address. The candidate is required to pay a tuition fee per year:

  • Year 1: € 2700;
  • Year 2 and 3: € 1900;
  • Year 4 onwards: € 900.

Part-time PhD candidates will not receive a salary or scholarship, and thus must be financially independent.

Deadlines

The admissions to the programme are rolling. Each newly admitted candidate will join the part-time programme’s next meeting, which are held in the autumn and spring. Successful candidates who submit full applications received before September 1 and by March 1 can still join the next programme meeting.
