Starting signal for construction of new energy-neutral sports centre on the Woudestein campus

The building contract between the Stichting Erasmus Sportaccommodaties (Erasmus Sports Facilities Foundation) and Remmers Construction Group has been signed. The signature is the starting signal for the construction of the new sports centre on the Woudestein campus. The new building will have three competition rooms, two training rooms, an extensive fitness facility and a café. Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) will own the building, and the Erasmus Sport Foundation will take care of operations.

“The new sports centre will be an inspiring place where our students and staff can work out and relax. We want this new sports building to meet the demand of our community and further encourage exercise on campus,” says Roelien Ritsema van Eck, a member of EUR’s Executive Board.

Energy-neutral sports centre

The inner street that connects the two building sections will be a feature of the new sports complex. The covered street will have a logistics function as well as serving as a meeting place for people using the building. The sports centre will also be pioneering in terms of sustainability. This marks another step towards making EUR a sustainable and CO2-neutral campus. The new sports centre will be in an energy-neutral building, and the principles of circular construction will be applied.

“Fitness is the best addition to studying at Erasmus University. The facilities in this building are absolutely top notch,” says Jon de Ruiter, Director of Erasmus Sports.

Construction period

Construction will start on the undeveloped site next to the Sanders Building at the end of 2020. In the preceding period the site will be prepared for construction. One of the reasons for the new building is that the number of fitness enthusiasts signing up with Erasmus Sport is growing every year. The building is scheduled to be completed in 2022. The current sports building on campus will remain in use for the time being, so gym members need never miss their workout.
