What are the norms that ground reasonable deliberation in society, and how can emerging technologies such as AI play an instrumental role in public deliberation? Does deliberation strengthen democracy, and can AI benefit social deliberation in democratic societies?
This one-day workshop aims to shed light on the theoretical foundations of collective deliberation and the value of multi-modal AI (visual, spoken, and written activities) in advancing constructive deliberation in society. The workshop is a collaboration between the NWO Vidi ENCODE project (Explicating the Norms of Collective Deliberation) hosted at the Erasmus University Rotterdam, led by Frederik Van De Putte, and the AI DeMoS Lab (AI as Deliberative Multimodal Systems) based at TU Delft, led by Olya Kudina and Nazli Cila. The workshop will begin with overviews delivered by the project and lab leaders of the aims of the respective research initiatives, along with some novel insights drawn from their current research. The afternoon segment will consist of presentations from the members and affiliates of the research initiatives from EUR and TU Delft.
We invite all to participate in the workshop and thereby promote a cooperative venture between EUR and TU Delft. In case you wish to attend (part of) the workshop, please write a brief message to Lee Elkin (elkin@esphi.eur.nl) so that we can adapt catering-wise.
