The Erasmus of Rotterdam Research Centre (ERRC) regularly organizes the so-called Erasmus Seminars, where we bring together academics who have an interest in Erasmus from their research. The content of the seminars is diverse, from discussions on recent publications to extensive lectures. On behalf of the ERRC, we cordially invite you to the upcoming seminar on Thursday, December 8th, 2022. During this meeting, our very own Sanne Steen will give a seminar on Erasmus and Orangism.
What? Erasmus Seminar with a lecture by Sanne Steen
When? Thursday, December 8, 2022, 15:00-17:00 hrs.
Where? G2-32, G-building, Erasmus University Rotterdam, Campus Woudestein
Abstract:
In this talk, Sanne Steen will present her research on the Orangist engagements with Erasmus’s statue in 1810 and 1813 and especially its influence on political and scholarly discourse. She argues that the Orangist appropriation of Erasmus led to the subsequent identification of William of Orange as follower of Erasmus or as child of his time; an Erasmian time, that is. Sanne takes a step back to consider what this case means for our current engagements with history, both as individuals and as scholars. After the talk, there will be ample time to discuss relations between Erasmus and William of Orange, contemporary public engagements with Erasmus and, more broadly, public engagements with history in general.
Bio:
Sanne Steen is a PhD candidate at ESPhil and part of the Erasmus of Rotterdam research centre. Central in her research is the question how historical affinities with Erasmus have shaped our current understanding of this early modern humanist. More generally, she is interested in the way historical misinterpretations have long-lasting influence on our understanding of history.
