What does this study entail?
The step to a research university such as Erasmus University Rotterdam can be quite big. There are more reading materials, which are of higher complexity than what you might be used to. You are expected to work more independently and conduct your own research projects.
The pre-master helps you develop the skills and competences you need to pursue the master's degree. You will familiarise yourself with the most essential concepts and theories in media studies. You will then train your essential academic skills such as arguing, using sources and academic writing. Finally, you will also improve your research skills, such as setting up a research project, conducting analysis, and reporting your findings.
When you apply for the pre-master's, you already have to choose a direction in which you will specialise during your master's: Media & Business, Media & Creative Industries, Media & Journalistiek or Media, Culture & Society.
Bridging the knowledge gap
The pre-master helps you to bridge both the study load and the knowledge gap between your prior education and our master specialisations in Media Studies (Media & Business, Media & Creative Industries, Media & Journalistiek (Dutch) or Media, Culture & Society). In the first term, you will follow the essential courses from our bachelor programme to help you get familiar with the most important concepts and theories in media studies. Throughout those courses you will follow lectures and you will work in small groups during tutorials to fully grasp the learning materials.
Is this the right programme for you?
Maybe you’ve completed an academic bachelor’s degree in a field different than Media Studies and miss certain theoretical knowledge. Or you may not meet all the requirements, for example after finishing a bachelor’s degree at a university of applied sciences (hbo).
