In several podcasts, Thomas Peeters, Associate Professor at Erasmus School of Economics, was asked for his expertise on the Super League and the recent lawsuit at the European Court. Will the Super League be able to surpass the Premier League?
The Premier League has billions of euros at its disposal and is therefore very powerful in the (European) football world. That money gives the big football clubs the opportunity to attract better players, which increases the overall viewing figures and generates more income. This is like a snowball that keeps on rolling. However, a few years ago a counter movement was started by some countries, with the help of an American investment agency. This was suppressed at the time, but a lawsuit took place at the European Court on December 21, 2023. Is it allowed to ban other competitions?
The European Court has now decided that UEFA and FIFA may not ban the Super League. Nevertheless, Thomas Peeters has his doubts whether a new League can be created in the short term. It is still too big a step for many clubs to take part and many football supporters are not yet convinced of the plan. Yet Thomas Peeters does not rule out the chance of a new competition.
