What does the new business economist look like?

Economics students Ard Jan Biemond and Henri Slob interviewed Harry Commandeur, Professor of Industrial Economics and Business Economics and holder of the F.J.D. Goldschmeding chair at Erasmus School of Economics, on the topic of ‘the new business economist’.

Prof. Commandeur’s analysis of the old Business Economist is that “the old business economist hasn’t developed himself since the 1970s. Therefore, he has been overtaken by the business administrators.” According to Prof. Commandeur it is still possible to develop him or herself. For this, a more holistic approach of the essence of a business economist is necessary. This holistic approach of business economics consists of two new core qualities, besides the four old ones. The old qualities of the business economist are Accounting, Finance, Governance & Organization and Marketing. The new business economist should also master Data, Information and Knowledge Management, as well as a profound understanding of Ethics, Leadership and Motives.
