Shell had paid no tax on Dutch profits for years

Erasmus School of Economics

Shell has not paid any profit tax in the Netherlands for years, despite earning billions of euros in the country every year. The Dutch newspaper Trouw announces these findings based on 'well informed' sources and a confidential internal document from the Ministry of Finance. Peter Kavelaars, Professor of Fiscal Economics at Erasmus School of Economics, shares his thoughts on this issue on BNR Nieuwsradio, 29 November 2018.

'Tax profit determination is different from commercial profit determination. Commercial profit determination is often higher, and this can be one of the reasons why Shell does not pay any tax profits in the Netherlands. In addition, Shell is always under the control of the tax authorities because it is such a big company. Shell can not escape this control, so I am quite convinced that no rules are being violated by Shell.'
