A limited CO2 tax would make it more expensive to reduce emissions, according to more than fifty economists. If the Netherlands would implement a system where each company pays the same price for every tonne of CO2, The Netherlands could reach its climate goals against the lowest price for society.

More than fifty economists, including Bas Jacobs, professor of Public Economics at Erasmus School of Economics, pled for a uniform CO2 price at the beginning of the year: the same rate for all sectors, all companies, with a carefully designed return of the proceeds to prevent company relocations and greater inequality. Such a CO2 tax should be introduced as soon as possible, predictably and gradually increasing over time, in order to meet the objectives of The Paris Agreement. Furthermore, such an implementation would provide clarity for business and consumers and mitigate the transition effects. According to the economists, this is the CO2 tax system that best serves the interests of Dutch society.
