Relational Economy: from individual to common interest

Erasmus Institute for Business Economics

Lans Bovenberg, Professor of Relational economics, Values and Leadership at Erasmus School of Economics, argues for shifting the focus of the economy from the individual interest to the common interest. The incorporation of ‘relational’ into economics affects three things: science, governance and education. In order to encourage a change in our thinking, it is necessary to expand our view on human behaviour.

The idea is not new, but the approach of Professor Bovenberg is practical and looks at the value of leadership theory and education curricula. The current (secondary) education is quite individually focused, so that would be the place to start if we want to change contemporary ideas about the economy and its actors.
