Professor Emeritus Dik Wolfson passed away at the age of 91

On 16 March 2025, Professor Emeritus Dik Wolfson passed away at the age of 91. 

In 1975, he was appointed Professor of Public Finance at Erasmus School of Economics, a position he held until 1986. From 1986 to 1990, he was Rector of the International Institute of Social Studies in The Hague. After his rectorship, he returned to Erasmus University as part-time professor of economics at Erasmus School of Social and Behavioural Sciences from 1993 to 1998.

Wolfson began his career at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington, where he served as Permanent Representative to Liberia, among other positions. In the 1970s, he held positions at the Dutch Ministry of Finance, including Deputy Director of Domestic Monetary Affairs and Director of Economic Policy.

In addition to his academic career, Wolfson was active in various advisory bodies. He was a member of the Scientific Council for Government Policy (WRR) from 1990 to 1998 and a crown member of the Social and Economic Council (SER) for fourteen years. In these roles, he made important contributions to discussions on socio-economic policy and social security reforms.

For the Labour Party (PvdA), Wolfson was a member of the Senate from 8 June 1999 to 10 June 2003. Here he was involved in financial and social policy, defence and higher education. In 1989, he was elected a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, in recognition of his contributions to economics.

Dik Wolfson is remembered as an influential economist, dedicated politician and respected professor. His work has had a lasting impact on both academia and public policy in the Netherlands.
