A master's degree in Accounting offers you the best opportunities on the labour market, according to a ranking of master's programmes of UWV, a Dutch government agency which implements employee insurances and provides labour market and data services. The master in Accounting is followed by master’s programmes in Econometrics (ranked 2nd). A master’s degree in Fiscal Economics is ranked sixth.
Alumni of master's programmes in Accounting find a permanent job in the shortest period of time and also earn high incomes. For alumni of master’s programmes in Econometrics it takes a little longer to find a substantial job and the percentage of alumni who found a job within 15 months is lower. Prospects for the digital future
While the master in Accounting received the highest ranking from the UWV when it comes to opportunities on the labour market, the master's programme received heavy criticism as well this week from its own branch association of controllers and management accountants, the IMA. According to the IMA, master's programmes in Accounting do not sufficiently match with the practice of accounting in the world of today. This is because the rise of artificial intelligence is expected to drastically change the profession of the accountant. However, very few of the master's programmes prepare their students for a career in the accounting world in which automatisation will play a leading role. According to the chairman of IMA, Jeff Thomson, 'the traditional accountant and the manner in which he or she is educated is very different from what the practice of today requires.'
