Lecture by Frank van Oort at G40 administrative networking day

On 20 February 2025, Frank van Oort, Professor of Urban & Regional Economics at Erasmus School of Economics, was invited to give a lecture at a meeting of the G40 cities network, with the plenary theme “urbanisation and economy”.

The G40 cities network consists of 41 medium-large cities in our country, which find each other in the urban issues facing the network's members. The main goal of the G40 cities network is to promote the joint interests of the G40 cities in various policy areas towards the government, the Senate and the House of Representatives and ministries. Within the network, the various policy areas are grouped into three pillars: the Social Pillar, the Economy and Work Pillar and the Physical Pillar.

In his lecture, Van Oort reflected on the big differences in the economy per region. The question then arises which choice does justice to the regional own strength, and which serves the national interest. A spatial economic vision is being developed as an underlay for the draft National Spatial Strategy, Van Oort said. He argued that infrastructure investments, for example, contribute to broad prosperity.
