Mary Pieterse-Bloem, Professor of Financial Markets at Erasmus School of Economics, was part of BNR radio's investor panel. Several topics were covered, including investing in whisky and defence companies.
Investing in whisky
Around Christmas, the message often comes again that investing in whisky can be very lucrative. In 2021, Pieterse-Bloem was asked the question whether this is actually a good investment. She indicated then that it is better to have whisky in your home to enjoy rather than invest in it, an opinion she still supports. After all, there is no permanent compensation for the risks that may arise. Besides, the message that it is a good investment often comes from stakeholders in the business.
Investing in defence
There is increasing pressure from the government on the entire sector. Banks are also questioning whether to invest in defence companies. Customers are also a driver in this, as they want to contribute to securing the Netherlands. Pieterse-Bloem points out that the dividing line between securing and doing harm is very small in this sector. There is a legal ban on investing in cluster munitions, so there is no investment in them anyway. The discussion currently on the table is about investing in controversial weapons. Insurers are already forbidden and unwilling to invest in these. With banks, it varies a lot, but the investment options are limited.
