'Government will come up with anonymous digital means of payment'

Casper de Vries
Erasmus School of Economics

The current crypto currencies, such as the Bitcoin, will not be a generally accepted means of payment in the future, according to Casper de Vries, Professor of monetary economics at Erasmus School of Economics. This has to do with the disadvantages of the current cryptosystems. However, De Vries is also of the opinion that ‘if the government does not come up with an anonymous means of payment, as a replacement for cash, the market will do so.’

De Vries believes that ‘there will be a need for an anonymous and legal digital means of payment, because we do not want the government is able to watch everything.’ Despite the fact that central banks are reluctant against this introduction, such an anonymous digital means of payment will come about, according to De Vries.
