Recently, Mary Pieterse-Bloem, Professor of Financial Markets at Erasmus School of Economics, appeared on a broadcast of BNR Nieuwsradio to discuss the difficult position US chip company Intel now finds itself in. Together with Martine Hafkamp, co-founder of Fintessa Vermogensbeheer, she discusses the choices that have led to the current situation within Intel, as well as a possible takeover by Qualcomm.
For quite some time now, chip giant Intel has been doing less well, especially after they chose not to supply chips to Apple at the advent of the smartphone. More recently, we see Intel losing manufacturing efficiency, since it is virtually the only company that still designs and produces all chips in-house.
Chip company Qualcomm does focus on chips for mobile phones, and has grown tremendously in recent years. They recently probed Intel for a possible takeover, but that is something we do not need to expect for the time being, Pieterse-Bloem said. ‘Such a takeover is a process of years, so for now we do not have to count on that,’ she states. Moreover, it remains very uncertain whether that takeover will ever take place, as Qualcomm has also halted such plans in the past.
