City auditors aren't quick to present jubilant reports on city finances, Rotterdam being no exception. Director Paul Hofstra has been heavily criticizing the city of 'doers' for over ten years. 'City auditors aren't applause machines'.
'Paul gets something fanatical over him when he has the idea that something isn't adding up,' says Jan de Ridder, president of the city auditors of Amsterdam. He means that in a positive sense: 'His eagerness and persistency go well with the job, because eventually we always deliver unpleasant news.'
