Erasmus School of Economics honours Sijbren Cnossen

During a gathering on Friday, 24 May 2019, Erasmus School of Economics honoured Sijbren Cnossen, Emeritus Professor of Tax Law, with the establishment of a Chair in Public Economics, which is named after him. Since September 2018 the Sijbren Cnossen Chair is held by Bas Jacobs, Professor of Public Economics.

The gathering started with some warm opening words of former Dean Philip Hans Franses, in which he expressed his appreciation towards Sijbren Cnossen, who is 83 years old and still active as Academic Partner of CPB Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis and as Professor of Economics at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. What followed was a discussion between Professor Cnossen and Professor Jacobs, in the presence of colleagues, experts, friends and family members.

Under the direction of former school member Dr Ruud de Mooij, currently Chief Tax Policy, Fiscal Affairs Department, International Monetary Fund, Sijbren Cnossen and Bas Jacobs gave their vision on the current Dutch tax system and discussed which fundamental reforms are needed in the Netherlands.

Sijbren Cnossen Conference: Fundamental Tax Reform in the Netherlands

The gathering was part of a 2-day-conference, Fundamental Tax Reform in the Netherlands, which was held at Erasmus School of Economics on 23 and 24 May 2019. During this conference, many leading professors presented their research into various parts of the tax system and discussed their findings with each other, as well as with PhD students in the field of public economics and policy officers of the Ministry of Finance and the CPB Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis.

These presentations and discussions form the building blocks which Professor Bas Jacobs and Emeritus Professor Sijbren Cnossen will use to publish a book which contains policy recommendations for the Ministry of Finance. This book will be published in November 2019.
