Erasmus School of Economics bans single-use paper coffee cups

Since the start of the new year Erasmus School of Economics has banned the single-use paper coffee cups in the office spaces. To reduce waste, the School’s employees can instead make use of reusable coffee mugs and tea or water glasses. All coffee areas are now equipped with these sustainable mugs and glassware.

20,000 cups per year

In his job as Director of Engagement at Erasmus School of Economics, Bas Karreman focuses amongst other things on coordinating the school’s activities related to societal impact: "We roughly estimated that the coffee consumption in the E-building resulted in the use of an average of 20,000 single-use paper cups per year. To illustrate, you could make a garland of 1,700 meters, that’s from E-building to the Kralingen Lake."

Karreman adds: "Depending on your preferences, you can take a mug and/or glass and keep it for personal use or you can just take a clean cup from the pantry whenever you need one!"
