According to the research of - amongst others - Frank van Oort, Professor of Urban and Regional Economics at Erasmus School of Economics, the economic potential of South Holland is under utilised. The most important cause of this is administrative fragmentation. If the complete region around The Hague would be governed by one authority, the economy of the Haaglanden would get a big boost. This will not only lead to an increase in labor productivity, but also in regional employment.

The research of the professors shows that collaboration between the municipalities of South-Holland is even more important for prosperity development than had previously been thought. Moreover, the research supports the obvious conclusion that regions as Haaglanden, Rijnmond, Leiden and Drechtsteden benefit more from having only one political authority instead of multiple, separate municipal authorities.
