Diversity within Erasmus School of Economics

Erasmus School of Economics

Just before Father’s day our Rector Magnificus Rutger Engels received (as all Rectores Magnifici in The Netherlands) a movie about women in academia. Research shows that fathers have a big influence on the occupation and career choices of their daughters. Successful men in academia and fathers of one or more daughters, Robbert Dijkgraaf, Ben Feringa, Alexander Rinnooy Kan, Wim van Saarloos and Carel Stolker, play the main roles in the (25 minutes) movie ‘Through the eyes of my daughter’.

At Erasmus School of Economics, we have been making efforts on several fronts to address gender diversity issues that are highlighted in this video, and also issues related to ethnic and social background.

On gender diversity, these include efforts to:

  • Attract more female students to Economics and Econometrics studies, through student ambassadors;
  • Encourage more of our talented female students to pursue an academic career;
  • Become more attractive for female academic staff;
  • Identify and reduce any biases in decisionmaking process, through implicit bias training for the management team, department directors and commissions;
  • Tackle identified problems such as the impact of pregnancy on academic careers;
  • Increase the visibility of current female academic staff;
  • Increase female participation in decisionmaking.

These efforts fit our broader diversity policy, which is being implemented by our Diversity Officers, the Management Team, the Education Programme Director and HR partner, in collaboration with the Central Diversity Office of Erasmus University Rotterdam. For more information on the diversity policy of our School, please contact Diversity Officer Teresa Bago d’Uva or Director of Operations Sarah Wilton.
