Professor of practice Dennis Huisman is promoted to a regular chair in the Econometrics department of Erasmus School of Economics. He has been a parttime professor of Public Transport Optimisation (0.4 fte) since 2016.
Dennis Huisman combines his work as a professor of Public Transport Optimisation with his parttime position as Expertise Manager Logistic Processes within the Netherlands Railways’ Digitalisation of Operations department.
According to Department Director Dennis Fok, the appointment to a regular chair is a logical consequence and well deserved: ‘Over the years Dennis Huisman has participated in research, teaching and management in a way that has gone far beyond what could have been expected of a professor of practice.’
Impactful research on Public Transport
For the Econometrics department (and Operations Research in general), Public Transport is an important application area. In his research Dennis Huisman focuses on a broad range of public transport problems where optimisation techniques can help improve outcomes for travelers, public transport personnel, or the operators. Huisman’s work also has a large impact outside academia because he is able to directly implement parts of his research findings at Netherlands Railways (NS). His work is also recognised by other public transport organisations. The impact of his research is underscored by the long-running PhD-research collaboration that Dennis Huisman has set up between the university and NS. Already since 2010, NS has structurally sponsored PhD positions. The candidates on these positions have the opportunity to see the academic as well as the more applied side of research in Public Transport. These PhD projects have led to some high-profile academic publications and good placements in the academic job market. Next to academic output, Dennis Huisman’ s research also leads to a significant practical value by improving NS’ operations and thereby making sustainable transport more attractive.
About Dennis Huisman

In 2004, he received the PhD degree for this by Erasmus University Rotterdam. Since that time, he holds parttime positions at Erasmus School of Economics and at NS. In 2008, Huisman was one of the members of the NS team presented with the prestigious Franz Edelman Award. The Franz Edelman Award has also been referred to as the ‘Super Bowl of Operations Research’.
