Erasmus School of Economics Dean Patrick Groenen received the award for Lecturer of the Year during the graduation ceremony of the Research Master Business Data Science cohort 2021-2023 on 24 November.

Dean Groenen was awarded for Supervised Machine Learning: a type of machine learning that learns the relationship between input and output. The inputs are known as features or ‘X variables’ and output is generally referred to as the target or ‘y variable’. The type of data which contains both the features, and the target is known as labeled data. It is the key difference between supervised and unsupervised machine learning, two prominent types of machine learning.

"I am happily surprised and feel honoured to receive this award as it was based on the votes of the BDS students. I trust that I have been able to bring them one step further in the beautiful world of machine learning techniques, their computations, and their results", says Patrick Groenen.

The ceremony was organised together with the student cohort of the Tinbergen Institute research master in Economics.
