Nobel Prize winner and alumnus of Erasmus School of Economics, Prof. Guido Imbens, has been appointed Commander in the Order of the Lion of the Netherlands. Imbens received the ribbon from Minister Robbert Dijkgraaf on Wednesday 29 March 2023.
Hall of fame and decoration
Together with Minister Dijkgraaf, Imbens also unveiled his bronze buste in the Hall of Fame of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science in The Hague. The statue of Imbens is made by artist Efrat Zehavi. In addition to this unveiling, Minister Robbert Dijkgraaf presented Imbens with the decorations that come with the title Commander in the Order of the Lion of the Netherlands on behalf of the King.
Appointments as Commanders of the Order of the Netherlands Lion are rare, being given for example to Dutch Nobel Prize laureates or artists of international renown. Distinguished Dutch citizens who received this honour in the past are writer and illustrator Dick Bruna, conductor Bernard Haitink, actor and director Jeroen Krabbé and most recently Ben Feringa, Nobel Prize laureate for Chemistry in 2016.
In the autumn of 2023, at the celebration of the 110th anniversary, Erasmus University Rotterdam will confer an honorary doctorate on Guido Imbens. The econometrician is nominated by Erasmus School of Economics, where he studied himself.
