10 years of DSB

Erasmus School of Economics

Casper de Vries, Witteveen chair of Monetary Economics at Erasmus School of Economics, was a guest at the BNR radio show ‘Ask me Anything’. Topic of debate, 10 years of DSB. In 2009 Dirk Scheringa Bank went bankrupt, but nowadays they still exist.

It were tense times for accountholders at DSB. Depositors till €100.000,- had to have some patience, but got away without a scratch because of the Deposit Guarantee Scheme. Nevertheless, thirty thousand depositors with more than €100.000,- of savings were left in uncertainty. At the other hand, people with a loan were wondering if their debts weren’t too high.

From the beginning DSB had problems in their governance. First of all the dominance of the chairman, Mr. Scheeringa. Secondly the fiscal unit could be used as a sneak circuit for money to disappear into sponsorships. And lastly the products sold were not fair prised, thus de Vries.
