With the establishment of the chairs of Bovenberg and Van Geest, Erasmus University Rotterdam responds to important developments in economic ideas and enhances the range of education offered by both the philosophy and economy study programmes. Economists challenge theologists to involve more explicitly the importance of reciprocity in their questions about meaning.
Theologists make suggestions to economists to expand their model of the homo economicus, who is only rational and acts from self-interest. This is possible by regarding humans as not merely economic beings but more as social beings, who are not always rational but who grow through giving and receiving love.
