About the speakers

Dr Jurjen Kamphorst

Dr Jurjen Kamphorst is an Assistant Professor at the Erasmus School of Economics (ESE) and a fellow at the Tinbergen Institute. He holds a MSc degree from the ESE, and a PhD from the Vrije Universiteit (Amsterdam) & Tinbergen Institute. Before obtaining tenure at the ESE, he worked at the law department of Leiden, and the Utrecht School of economics.

His research areas cover many topics within applied micro-economic theory, such as Personnel Economics, Industrial Organization, Social Network Formation, Law and Economics and Crime. He is also one of the directors of the new Erasmus Centre for Economic and Financial Governance (ECEFG).

Dr Owen O'Donnell

Dr Owen O'Donnell is an Associate Professor in the Erasmus School of Economics and the University of Macedonia (Greece). He is a Research Fellow of the Tinbergen Institute and NETSPAR. He obtained his DPhil from the University of York (UK) and has held faculty or visiting positions at the universities of Kent (UK), Lausanne (CH) and Wisconsin-Madison (US).

His research is mainly within the field of health economics, covering topics such as inequality in health and health care, the interactions between health, employment and income, and health care financing in low and middle income countries. He is co-organiser of the European Workshops on Econometrics and Health Economics and an Associate Editor of Health Economics.

Prof. Michael Frakes

Prof. Michael Frakes is the A. Kenneth Pye Professor of Law at Duke Law School. He holds a secondary faculty appointment in the Duke Economics Department. Frakes also serves as a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He joined the Duke Law faculty in June, 2016 from Northwestern University’s Pritzker School of Law, where he was an associate professor.

Frakes is generally interested in empirical research in the areas of health law and innovation policy. His research in health is largely focused on understanding how certain legal and financial incentives affect the decisions of physicians and other health care providers. His research in innovation policy centers on exploring the determinants of behaviors and outcomes at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Frakes’ scholarship has appeared in leading economics, law and medicine journals, including the American Economic Review, American Economic Journal: Economic Policy, Review of Economics and Statistics, Stanford Law Review, University of Chicago Law Review and JAMA.

Prof. Melissa Wasserman

Melissa Wasserman’s research focuses on the institutional design of innovation policy, with a particular emphasis on patent law and administrative law. Her articles have been published or are forthcoming in both student edited law reviews and peer review journals including Stanford Law Review, California Law Review, Northwestern University Law Review, Vanderbilt Law Review, Texas Law Review, Duke Law Journal, Review of Economics and Statistics, Journal of Public Economics, and Journal of Empirical Legal Studies.

Dr Paola Bertoli

Dr Paola Bertoli is Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Verona. She obtained her PhD in 2014 at the University of Bologna and at the Erasmus University Rotterdam.

Before joining the Department of Economics in Verona, she worked as Assistant Professor at the University of Economics, Prague and at the Institute for Economics Studies, Charles University. Her main fields of research are public economics, health economics and law and economics.
