The start of the new government of Donald Trump has brought up even more strongly the public discussions about migration. But little is spoken about the experience of migration and diaspora in the voice of those who have left their countries of origin searching for better living conditions. Carlos Hagerman and Jorge Villalobos have discussed these experiences in their adult animated documentary Home is Somewhere Else.

Dr. Amanda Paz Alencar and Dr. Ana Uribe Sandoval will introduce Home is Somewhere Else. The movie won accolades in festivals around the world, including IDFA. Three different life stories with three different styles of animation. Dr. Paz Alencar will also present the project Translocal Lives, started in the EUR, that has worked with migrants to the Netherlands, empowering them to tell their stories. Dr. Uribe Sandoval, course coordinator of Media in Latin America, will kick of the Spanish Film Festival organized with her students as part of their course projects.

About the documentary:
Home Is Somewhere Else is an animated feature documentary providing a window into the hearts and minds of immigrant youth and their undocumented families. It features three stories, each animated in a different style and voiced by the actual children and their families, that are woven together by spoken word poet Lalo “El Deportee.”
