Prof. dr. Ruard Ganzevoort will lead the discussion about “Academics and Activism”.

EUR describes its mission as ‘making minds matter’. Impact is one of the key factors of the academic profile of the university. And in fact, many scholars are deeply engaged with societal issues and see their work as a contribution to make the world a better place. But how to navigate the grey zone between academia and activism? When it comes to fossil fuel, political polarisation, or human rights, should scholars be neutral? Or should they take a position? And what about the institution itself? Ruard Ganzevoort is rector of the International Institute of Social Studies and used to be a politician and – somehow – activist at the same time. He will facilitate an honest conversation on dilemmas and paradoxes.

Our Conversations with the Dean series is meant to pay attention to the wider academic development of PhD candidates.

In an informal setting, EGSH dean Esther Rozendaal or one of the Deans of our faculties will host a conversation with Erasmus University scholars and PhD candidates on a theme that has their interest.

Previous themes included reward & recognition and transdiciplinary research. We warmly invite suggestions for future episodes!
