ESSB is a vastly growing and diversifying social sciences faculty located in Rotterdam, a city with unique resilience and challenges. Diverse and inclusive knowledge production and education are essential in fostering scientific and social impact.
Over the past years, we have seen increased awareness and engagement among ESSB faculty members on D&I-related topics. In addition to much research on D&I-related issues, we have also seen a high participation rate in D&I events. From the ESSB student body's feedback, we also know the importance of emphasising inclusive education and curriculum. Therefore, the ESSB D&I team would like to shed light on inclusive education and research through the ESSB symposium.
2 sessions - Laura den Dulk, Alex Huang (ESSB D&I team)
Both workshops showcase the work of the D&I team and our colleagues at ESSB. We will exchange ideas, brainstorm together, and activate more inclusive approaches to ESSB education and research, fostering a collaborative effort. Please feel welcome to join if you'd like to gain insight, share experiences, and contribute to a more inclusive ESSB.
Session 1 | 14.00-15.00 |EN | Erasmus University College
Education as a safe and brave space - Co-creating an ESSB social contract for Safe and Brave Spaces
How can we initiate the co-creation of safe and brave spaces in our classroom? Creating " safe and brave spaces" for impactful and transformative education highlights the importance of shared responsibility between teachers and students to interact respectfully while enabling challenging and uncomfortable conversations. This is becoming challenging and much needed in current times. In this workshop, we discuss how we can use shared rulemaking to co-create a social contract between students and teachers and amongst students that facilitates an inclusive, safe and brave learning environment for all.
Also with Amira Fretz, the EUC D&I liaison officer, who will introduce and utilize Brave Spaces during our interactive session.
Session 2 | 15.-15 –16.15 | EN | Erasmus University College
Diversity and Inclusion in Research - Design, social engagement, and accessibility
How can we embed diversity and inclusion in our research design? How can we do socially engaged research and meaningfully impact diverse groups of social actors? During this session, we will first discuss how to draft research proposals while considering D&I. We will then showcase how to collaborate with diverse social groups in research by discussing research design and methodologies. Additionally, we will exchange experiences and brainstorm how research can be accessible to the public and how we can present results in inviting and meaningful ways to target social groups.
Also with Maria Schiller (VCC), to share experiences/practices of the VCC (re)mapping Rotterdam project as a good practice for social engagement and accessibility.
