Darja
Student at Erasmus University Rotterdam - living at a host via Hospi Housing
Finding student housing in The Netherlands can be a real challenge, as Darja a master student from Latvia quickly discovered. Before she came to Rotterdam for her master, she already spent three years in Amsterdam. After struggling to secure a place to live, she found out about Hospi Housing, a unique platform that connects students with local hosts. Through Hospi Housing, Darja met Natasha, her current host.
Natasha's journey as a host
Natacha was born and raised in Russia but has lived in The Netherlands for about 30 years. With both of her children moving out, her house felt a little empty. Looking for company and a way to make good use of her space, she decided to become a host through Hospi Housing.
Signing up to the platform went very easy and quick. She simply needed to answer a few questions, upload a few pictures of her home and had a short intake. Soon after, her home came live. And within just three hours, she already received over 30 responses. This allowed her to choose a student who perfectly matched her preferences.
The first student Natasha hosted was a girl from Italy, which she loved since it gave her an opportunity to practice her Italian. After six months, the girl went home to Italy, and then Darja arrived. For Natasha, selecting a student is about finding the right connection. Preferences can be written down, but the right feeling is what matters most.
Life as a Hospi Housing host
Each hosting experience is unique. Natasha's first student was more independent, often out late, and studying a lot. Although they did not spend much time together, they still shared some meals and checked in on each other every day. With Darja, her experience is different. She is home more often, allowing for more time together.
When a new student arrives, Natasha sits down with them to discuss expectations and practical matters, such as cleaning and house rules. Some questions may arise later, like can I have friends over, but having a transparent conversation makes everything go smoothly.
For Natasha, hosting is nothing but rewarding. She enjoys having company, feeling less alone, and forming a new connection. Her advice to potential hosts? Just try it! You might love it, and you'll be making a difference by helping with the student housing crisis.
Darja's Perspective: why living with a host?
Darja turned to Hospi Housing when she struggled to find student accommodation in Rotterdam. She applied to multiple homes and was happy when she matched with Natasha. For Darja, living with a host has been amazing. The conditions are significantly better compared to student housing options. The price to quality ratio is much fairer, it is safer with no risk of scams and overall, the costs are lower.
In Amsterdam, Darja lived with a friend, which she enjoyed. But she now enjoys it even more while living with a host. For her one of the biggest advantages is that she can speak Russian at home after a long day. Having a Russian host makes her feel truly at home, away from home.
Darja's advice to students considering Hospi Housing? Go for it! It is not just a great way to integrate into Dutch culture, it is also a fun experience. Plus, if you value privacy, it can be an even better option than student housing. And once you move in, take the time to connect with your host, it makes the experience even more rewarding.
Living together has led to many memorable moments for Darja and Natasha. Whether it is cooking, baking (especially pancakes), or simply chatting on the couch. They have built a strong bond. Darja has also enjoyed meeting Natasha's children.
Are you a student looking for a safe and welcoming place to live? Or a homeowner with extra space and a desire for good company? Hospi Housing might be the perfect fit for you.
