RCW (Rian) Koreman, MSc

Biography

Rian Koreman (1986) is a PhD-lecturer in the Department of Media & Communication at Erasmus University.

After obtaining her Bachelor in Journalism from the University of Applied Sciences in Utrecht, she enrolled in the pre-master programme Media & Journalism at Erasmus University, followed by the Master Media & Journalism, from which she graduated cum laude in 2012. In her Master’s thesis she studied the way audiences give meaning to popularized politics by exploring what women think of appearances of Dutch politicians in the Dutch talk show Koffietijd.

During her Master’s year Rian started working as a student assistant and in the following year, she combined her work with the Research Master in the Sociology of Culture, Media & the Arts (abridged programme). Her Research Master’s thesis revolved around the legitimation of specific genres of Dutch pop music (volksmuziek, dance music and hip-hop/rap music) in Dutch elite newspapers.

After her graduation, she worked as a Junior Academic Lecturer in the International Bachelor Communication and Media for a year. From September 2014 on, she has been working on the NWO-funded project: Constructing Cultural Authority. The online and offline evaluation of popular music and fiction books under supervision of prof.dr. Susanne Janssen and dr. Marc Verboord.
