Why do obese corona patients in particular often end up in the ICU? Professor of endocrinology Liesbeth van Rossum (Erasmus MC) explains it in the talk show Jinek.
Van Rossum explains that obese people are more susceptible to infections. We have known for some time that obese people, i.e. those with a Body Mass Index higher than 30, have changes in their immune system that cause an infection, be it bacterial or viral, to take a more serious course'.
In addition, there seems to be something specific going on with the coronavirus, which makes the course of the disease more serious among obese people.
